Auditioning is a fact of life for singers. For Opera and Musical Theatre Singers it's a skill that's the lifeblood of your career. Even for pop & R&B singers, auditioning well can mean the difference between breaking through in your career or not. There are many things to consider from vocal technique, musicality, and expression to presentation, marketing materials like your resume and headshots to your online presence. Everything has to be on point to ensure your success.
Our VMM Founder, Erin Fisher, coaches all of our VMM Artists directly, and herself has auditioned for opera, classical, musical theatre, jazz, and pop gigs. She has auditioned for conductors, print ads, commercials and showcased at presenter conferences and record labels. Erin has a range of experience, and will guide you in how to best prepare.
For each genre, auditions mean different things, and have different requirements. Appealing your panel will mean showcasing yourself professionally and representing yourself in the most positive light possible. For musical theatre this might mean polishing your performance CV to how you walk in the room and talk to the pianist. Showcasing for a record label means a perfect performance to honing your marketing material, and for jazz it may mean working on your ability to scat live.
For musical theatre auditions, this requires monologues and songs. Erin has coached acting for many years, and has helped her VMM Roster win Provincial awards for their acting. If you want, she can look over your resume and headshots, beyond the vocal coaching.
For showcasing in pop, rock, R&B and all contemporary genres, along with your vocal & music quality, labels and presenters are looking at your overall presentation/appeal, with special attention paid to your branding, especially online.
Regardless of these differences, you will be singing live. Different kinds of stress come with this, from vocal to technical to interpersonal. Our VMM Founder, Erin can help walk you through techniques and strategies to help with the stress of auditions, how to mentally prepare, offer advice regarding marketing material, resumes, media, personal style etc, and create a personalized warmup and vocal plan so you're in top vocal shape to give your best live performance.
